The Zaldiko Hostel is located at the finish line of the second stage Roncesvalles-Zubiri. Zubiri, which in Basque means "town of the bridge", is the capital of the Esteribar Valley, one of the most populated towns on this section of the Camino de Santiago as it passes through Navarre.
The village belonged to the Leire Monastery, and its most prominent feature is its two-arched Gothic bridge over the Arga River, known as the "Bridge of Rabies." The name derives from the fact that the villagers would purify their animals by passing them three times over its central pier. It is said that the relics of Saint Quiteria are buried in one of the bridge's abutments.
Today, Zubiri is well-served, boasting a sports center, pharmacy, medical clinic, restaurants, a general store, and two butcher shops famous for their chistorra sausages. One of these, Arrieta Butcher Shop, has its own workshop where it produces artisanal products typical of the area?products that are a must-try. It was the birthplace of the eminent philosopher Xabier Zubiri and also saw the birth of the pelota player Goñi III and the singer Serafín Zubiri.
