Open map Sarria, Sarria (Lugo), España

The French Way is the most renowned route to Santiago de Compostela, among other reasons because it connected distant lands during the early years of pilgrimage. The traces of that past, which pilgrims encounter upon entering Galicia, are most vividly reflected in the monasteries that line the route.

These sacred buildings were the seed of larger settlements and played a key role in shaping the economic and social development of inland Galicia.

The hostel opens its doors in a monastery built at the beginning of the 12th century, the same historical period in which the town of Sarria was founded, a town that has always been closely linked to the Camino de Santiago.

The architectural style of the Monastery of La Magdalena is Romanesque. However, the most significant restoration works were carried out during the 19th century, giving the monumental complex the appearance it has today.

Sarria is one of the most popular starting points of the Camino de Santiago, chosen by thousands of pilgrims each year to begin their journey to Compostela. Its surroundings, heritage and pilgrim atmosphere make it an essential stop before setting off on the French Way.
